This USB C to HDMI adapter is a USB Hub with a HDMI Output, this enables you to connect an external HDMI monitor. The USB 3.0 (USB A) port can be used to connect an additional device to the host computer, You can even connect another hub to this adapter.
***If you are using this Hub for HDMI output from a smartphone / Tablet then please check your device specs to ensure DP Alt-Mode is supported via the USB C port on your device.
The USB C port can charge the host computer for example a laptop and supply power for the adapter simultaneously. USB C Port - if you have a laptop which only has one USB C port and it uses this port for charging then you can still charge it whilst using the adapter plugged into the USB C port on the laptop, Chromebook, macbook etc.
